In October 2008, there were 24749 active registered Democrats in St. Mary's County. Nearly 1000 people registered as Democrats in October 2008 alone. Of those who registered via Armed Forces Recruitment, 66 registered as Democrats and 26 registered as Republicans.

The Election Judges who operate the polling places are a very important part of the electoral process. Election Judges staff all of St. Mary’s County's polling places at both the Primary and General elections.
Judges are paid $30 for completing the training and $125 for being a judge on Election Day.
