St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) will host the 2010 Maryland Legislative Wrap-up with Maryland Delegates John Bohanan, Anthony O’Donnell, and John Wood on Monday, April 26, from 3:30-5 p.m.

Sunshine Legislation for MD Government

Thanks to a variety of "sunshine legislation" introduced by  Montgomery County Delegates Heather Mizeur and Saqib Ali, both Democrats, the Maryland Government is becoming more open and accessible to citizens.

Starting in July 2010, the meetings of the Board of Public Works will be streamed online (http://www.governor.maryland.gov/stream.asp). The three members of the MD Board of Public Works--Gov. Martin O'Malley, Comptroller Peter Franchot, and Treasurer Nancy Kopp--are responsible for keeping the budget in balance and approving state contracts. The recordings will be available online for two weeks, until the next meeting airs.

Don't Phone and Drive

As of October 1, 2010, Maryland drivers are prohibited from using hand-held cell phones while behind the wheel. The new law was signed by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley on May 21.

“While the new law does not take effect until October 1, I challenge all drivers to stop using cell phones while driving immediately,” said Jack Russell, President, Board of County Commissioners for St. Mary’s County. “We know that the use of cell phones while driving causes many traffic accidents, injuries and fatalities.”
